The Pearl of Borneo – Labuan

Labuan is one of three federal territories in Malaysia, which located 8 km off the Borneo coast in East Malaysia, near Brunei. Its name is derived from the Malay word “pelabuhan”, which translates to “port”.

Labuan is made up of the main Labuan Island and 6 smaller islands, forming a combined area of approximately 92 square kilometers.

The main languages are Malay and English, and also certain indigenous dialects.

Labuan International Business and Financial Center (IBFC) was established in October 1990, making it Malaysia’s only offshore financial center. Here also being an offshore support hub for deepwater oil and gas activities in the region.

It has a tropical climate like the rest of the parts of Malaysia. Labuan experiences two annual monsoon seasons which are the South West monsoon which takes place from April to June and the North East monsoon which happens from September to December. Its climate is hot and humid all year round without hurricanes or typhoons. The temperature in Labuan ranges around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. The weather gets wet towards year-ends.

1. Labuan Museum

The Labuan Museum was officially opened on October 8, 2004 by YB Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Malaysia. This building was built in the 1950s during the colonial period as British Administration Office. In the 1963, it was used as a Labuan District Office. Then, in 1980s as Labuan Municipal Council Office. Department of Museums and Antiquity (now Department of Museums Malaysia) took over the building from the Labuan Corporation and began the conservation works in 1999. In August 2001, the construction and interior design of this museum started and finished in February 2002.

2. World War II Memorial Park

The World War II Memorial is definitely a must visit place when you step your foot in Labuan Island. It is a historical place and certainly a place to appreciate the scarifications that are done by all soldiers that were involved in the massive war. Most of the soldiers buried there were Australians and British, of course, there are others such as Punjab, locals, New Zealand and more.

The lawn was beautifully kept with neat rows of plaques. The boddies were all shipped in from Sabah, some with the military tags hanging around the necks. Out of the 3,908, there are as much as 2,156 are unidentified. White stones are given to each soldier with their names, military positions and death ages engraved on the stones.

3. The Chimney

This chimney constructed in about 1900 and what it is, and why it was built, has puzzled people for decades. It is stated that there is no traces of smoke and whatsoever that indicate that it works like any normal chimney.

However, the locals believe that it was used as a ventilation shaft. Still, there are many people that have other thought. Some say that it is just an unfinished mansion built in those days while others claim that it is a light house to be.

Until today, no one knows the right purpose of this chimney and this is why it is such mysterious. This also acts as an attraction which attracts tourists around the world as well as locals. It has a height of 106 feet and it was built with stacks of red bricks. It was made up with up to 23,000 pieces of red bricks that are imported from the England. The architectural style and design are more or less the same as those of British.

Near to the chimney, there is a museum with the name of Chimney Museum which showcases lots of information that are related. There are the brick samples from the chimney and the reinforcement materials used during the construction, just to name a few.

4. Rusukan Island

Rusukan Island, which located in south western of Labuan Island. Along the way enjoy the beautiful scenery in Brunei Bay. Rusukan Island is located in Labuan Marine Park, which is a protected area by local government. The island is still in very nature state due to the limitation of development. Tourist will be fascinated by crystal clear waters, the cool sea breeze, white sandy beaches, lush woods, colorful corals, fishes and unique landscapes.
